Hi and welcome to this site,

My name is Matt Carter, I am an independent Fire & Emergency photographer and Rural Firefighter from Ripley Valley near Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

In late 2005 a huge bushfire swept through the area in which I live, stretching resources and scorching the landscape in it’s path. Watching the urban and rural firefighters on the ground with water bombing helicopters overhead, I developed interest in capturing through photography the intensity and challenges of, in particular, large scale emergency incidents.

Soon after, under the guidance of Matt Hayes from Firecall.com.au, I began photographing the experiences of the Urban Firefighter and joined the Ripley Valley Rural Fire brigade, later qualifying as Rural Firefighter. I felt this not only allowed the ability to provide a direct voluntary contribution to the community that I live in, but also the ability to be part of the teams working control lines and fire fronts, often deep within bushland away from public visibility.

The upcoming technology in these areas is very interesting and my equipment now includes a miniature GPS tracking platform for geospatial referencing of photographs shot in the field and also a heat resistant video recording system. Both are light weight, durable and designed to operate in conjunction with the standard Bushranger firefighting helmet providing completely hands-free operation.

The enjoyment of this work has only grown and the fireground always proves to be a extremely dynamic and challenging but highly rewarding photographic environment. Now an active member of the International Association of Fire Photographers, Incidents, Competition & Training events also form a significant part of my photography with works frequently used by various agencies.

It is immensely satisfying to know that the use of my photography may have, even in a small way, contributed to the education of the community or provided a window into the world that is the firefighter. I will continue to do my best to capture through images the essence of firefighting and the tireless work performed by these humble heroes.
